Remarks & Notes
It’s the day before Halloween, 1985, and history of a sorts is being made at Andover, Virginia. This is the last day of semi-autonomy for the Interstate Railroad. The coal-hauling short line had been merged into Southern Railway in 1960, but except for its ten orange, cream, gray and silver “Yellow Jacket” RS-3s being shipped off to Atlanta in 1965, Southern had maintained the Interstate with its own crew district, dispatcher, maintenance of way forces, and other distinct features that made it a bit “special.” The shifting sands of change wrought by Norfolk Southern’s creation in 1982 have finally caught up, though. Veteran dispatcher Donnie Baker is manning his last shift at the desk. Spread before him are the tools of the trade: the big yellow train sheet, where he records everything that’s going on, operationally speaking. There’s also the train order book, which he uses to issue movement directions to the several crews working the mines or running between terminals. You can also see car placement reports for the tipples, and everything else necessary to keep this busy railroad fluid. Messages---typed on paper using genuine typewriters—hang from the lamp, both as information, and as an impromptu shade. Railroading was changing under the march of technology, and just 27 years ago at Andover, the old order now seems so distant.

Do you ever get the feeling as a model railroader, that you just might be creating something not "prototypical?" Same here.
