Remarks & Notes
Standing guard over Helena are the Elk Mountains. These mountains made Helena one of the richest gold mining camps in the West during the last half of the 19th Century. No less magnificent, the Cathedral of Saint Helena rises over Last Chance Gulch. The Cathedral was opened in 1914 and heavily damaged during the earthquakes during the 1930s. The only earthquake felt on this gorgeous afternoon was the rumbling of a westbound coal train departing Helena.
