Remarks & Notes
The No. 1 rated passenger train in South America is Perurail's "Andean Explorer" shown here leaving its southern terminus of Puno on the shore of Lake Titicaca on Aug. 2, 2008 for its 230-mile run north to Cusco, Peru. Alco DL-560 #659 tows the first-class cars built in Romania. Drydocked behind the train is a massive restoration project of steamship SS Ollanta which used to sail on the world's highest lake about 60 miles from Puno to Bolivia. It was originally built in England, was towed around Cape Horn to Mollendo (southern Peru), disassembled and moved in pieces by rail to Lake Titicaca and reassembled. Puno city is most of the background.
