In the foreground are the pilings of the double-track Matawan Creek Trestle of the NY&LB, which burned down in 1946. Remarkably, a temporary single-track trestle was erected in just 10 days and was used until the current embankment opened in 1953. So why are the pilings on the left side cut flat? My guess is that those were the pilings the temporary single-track trestle was built upon. |
