Remarks & Notes
In August 1958, three Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis EMD GP7s are in full throttle and on sand as they shove behind the caboose of a northbound through freight just above Tantallon, TN. This is the less-photographed and isolated south slope of the ascent over Cumberland Mountain, Tennessee. While most photos illustrate the Cowan-based helpers working southbound trains up to the tunnel, the helpers also came over to the other side to shove heavy northbounds. In fact, the south ascent, at 4.5 miles, was twice as long and with more curves. (Original photo by the late David Salter)
