Remarks & Notes

The first train on the former D&H Sanford Lake Branch in over 20 years rolls NB 2 miles out of North Creek with a special inspection train for invited guests of the railroad (there were a few light engine runs earlier in the week). Train consisted of flatcar UHRR 107 and freshly painted caboose SNC 1001. The caboose is in a D&H inspired paint scheme. This line was urgently built during World War II to reach a titanium deposit deep in the Adirondack Mountains at Sanford Lake-Tahawus. For 40 years daily trains of hopper cars hauled ore down this line but in 1989 the line was closed and mothballed following an earlier closure of mining operations. S&NC now offers freight service on this line. The tracks are currently in service to the Barton Mines Garnet Processing Plant just north of North River.
