Amtrak's Chicago destined westbound Cardinal has just paused in the bottom of the New River Gorge at Prince, to allow four passengers to board, and nine to detrain at the Art-Deco style Prince Station. Built and designed to promote the C&O's Chessie, the train was never placed into service, and therefore now serves as the far eastern station in West Virginia that is still served by an Amtrak agent along the Cardinal route. A total of 167 pasengers are on today's train, which exceed the total amount of residents for the entire community, and neighboring towns. Conductor L.L. Claytor will soon have the passengers on board, and the train will depart to the west, on time, for Chicago.
Powerful members of Congress once helped this scenic state get levels of service not seen elsewhere. Now the Capitol Limited and Cardinal are all that remain.
