The number plate underneath the Golden Glow headlight on Union Pacific 4-8-4 844, as with the number plates on most UP steam locomotives, was cast in the shape of the railroad's shield. This Northern, built by Alco in December 1944, is the only steam locomotive that is still operated (if only for special events) by its original owner, having never been retired.
