The so-called “Bill Gates Special,” a chartered Wisconsin and Southern passenger train with a few added cars for good measure, heads westbound just west of Rollins, Colorado, on September 25, 1998. Electro Motive Division E units operating on this former Rio Grande main line were rare; past history saw that mountain-climbing railroads of the west found EMD F unit more suitable for passenger trains on mountain grades. In less than a half hour, this train be taking the plunge in the 6.21-mile Moffat Tunnel.
