Who among us wouldn't like to climb into the left hand seat box behind the fireman of Southern Ps-4 Pacific 1406 on this 1941 afternoon at Washington Union Station's Ivy City Engine Terminal? Perhaps she's called to head mail and express train 19 toward Atlanta. After cruising through the approach to the Long Bridge over the Potomac, passing huge Pot Yard, and then making a brief stop at Alexandria, where the terminal headend crew will change for the road crew, her fresh hoghead will then wind her up for the sprint down Southern's splendid double track iron (equipped with Automatic Train Control) to the first crew change point at Monroe, VA. You'll need to put on your goggles if you intend to stick your head out the window, because this big green Pacific will be walkin' the dog!
