Although the Free State main line south of Bloemfontein is single track and non-electrified, trains arriving or departing Springfontein travel "under the wires" for a short distance at the north end of the station. Springfontein is the junction for the line to East London, which is electrified at 25 kV AC. A pair of class 34-900's is seen leaving Springfontein, northbound to Bloemfontein with empty cement wagons. Unlike the other GE class 34's, the 34-900 series were not retro-fitted with saddle filters on the roof behind the cab and so have retained their original flat roof line. It is unusual to see a pair of TFR diesels coupled nose to tail, as these two are.
