Remarks & Notes
Union Pacific's 4-6-6-4 Challenger #3985 was assigned to run an excursion from Salt Lake City to Provo and return on June 27, 1982. The coal burning steamer was built by the American Locomotive Company in July 1943 and was brought out of retirement and returned to service in April 1981. Photographed on the return tip to Salt Lake City, the Challenger ascends the 1.18% grade of the Provo Subdivision at milepost P-773.5 near Point of the Mountain while 11,749 foot Mt. Timpanogos looks on.
