Back in the pre-C40-8 1980s, CSX used small B-Bs (often U18Bs and GP16s) to pick up sand loads at the pits east of Montgomery and head for Williams Brothers in Atlanta. Some days it was quite a long, heavy train, but on this day 1899 leads a relatively short train into Auburn out of the late afternoon sun.
Coal and steel don't go bad. This album features long, slow, heavy freight trains; drag freights, slop freights, dead freights, etc. Trains with lots of power, and lots of different cargo slogging along behind.
Photos taken in the Deep South--primarily Alabama and Georgia--from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Featured railroads include the ICG, the West Point Route, SCL, Southern, Frisco, and even KCS.
