One of my favorite photos in Utah's Cache Valley is the image you see here. Union Pacific B23-7 #121 leads a lengthy Cache Valley Local north through Smithfield, crossing a small pile trestle over Summit Creek in the heart of town. I spoke with the crew that day and the consensus was the B23-7 wasn't really up for this assignment. By the following week, it was back to a steady diet of EMD GP38-2s. The CNW and SP box cars in the train are loaded with metal cans, manufactured locally on the Del Monte spur. The two covered hoppers just ahead of the caboose will be set out at Presto Plastics, a location not far from the Idaho stateline.
