Remarks & Notes
In the late 1970s, railroads were experimenting with alternatives to having locals with cabooses, as on some runs the caboose was problematic – it would need to be switched to the other end of the train when a local was returning to its origination point. And, switching (according to the accountants) costs money. To this end, EMD constructed 5 GP50s for the Burlington Northern with a shorter nose and a longer cab. General Electric designed the nose-less BQ23-7 (a regular B23-7 with an unusual Crew Quarters cab), and sold ten of them to the Seaboard Coast Line. Making a set out at SCL successor Seaboard System’s yard in Orlando, Florida, is SBD 5138. These engines would eventually end up in CSX paint when the SBD and Chessie System merged.
