Remarks & Notes
At 3:25 AM on the morning of Monday, November 3, 1969, northbound L&N freight number 856, powered by RS-3s 177 and 165, hit an open switch at the north end of the passing track at Big Stone Gap, derailing the two units and 20 cars of the 64-car train. The derailment was the result of vandalism, but thankfully the crew escaped without serious injury. The following afternoon, one of the L&N's then-new Orton 200-ton wreckers (other roads called them derricks, but not the L&N) is pulling derailed cars from the pile.

Pictures of things often unseen in the world of railroading. Interesting equipment, operations, and people that help the railroad go around.
