Clinchfield's SD-45 3612 is about to plunge into Speedy Tunnel (one of three in a straight-arrow row) at Mile Post 193.29 on the train's northbound climb up to the crest at Altapass, N.C. No ditch lights in those days, and the head brakeman has his "air conditioning" running full blast with the door open on a hot Aug. 7, 1980 to get a mountain breeze.
