Remarks & Notes
The New River hamlet of Whitethorne has perhaps ten dwellings. Its importance to the modern N&W--and today--is that of a helper station. Eastbound coal loads normally need a shove to get out of the New River Valley and over the Christiansburg plateau. Here SD40-2 1636 and a sister EMD SD40 1631 stand in the bright June sunshine waiting for their next assignment.
