Remarks & Notes
This is another great photo by the late Jack Fravert of Louisville. This is probably about 1950, and it's most likely a section of southbound train 73 (perhaps first 73, although it could be a second or third section, of course). The dark flags appear to be green in this monotone image. The location is the junction between the L&N's Cincinnati-Louisville Short Line main (the route for this train) and the "Old Road" (the Eastern Kentucky Division) via Shelbyville to Lexington and beyond. This freight is pulled by doubleheaded J4A Mikes (booster equipped)--typical on this tough line during steam. HK Tower was closed and demolished around 1959-'60, with the junction controlled by the Latonia dispatcher afterwards. Notice the headlight lens on the 1909--with the road number painted thereon, which was an L&N tradition--is slightly askew.
