Santa Fe 3279 rests on it side as clouds begins to close in on the site of the derailment just north of Highway 138 in Cajon Pass. Earlier, heavy rains caused track damage in the area, requiring work crews to repair the track. As crews were working in the early morning hours, Santa Fe 3279 East came around the corner and apparently hit a front-end loader, causing the derailment. Other locomotives involved in the derailment were ATSF 2959, ATSF 3282, and ATSF 3338.
