Thirty-aught-six The classic lines of a 1962-built Electro-Motive Division GP30 still shine on the weathered and battered Rio Grande No. 3006 as it heads Union Pacific’s West Local into Rocky, Colorado, on December 23, 1997. Even after 35 years of hard toil on a mountainous railroad, the factory-delivered paint doesn’t look all that bad, and gives the old “Thirty-aught-six” some character, fully two mergers removed in the modern railroad scene.
