| A Santa Fe Mikado with a relatively short freight has emerged from the Raton Pass tunnel for eastbound trains. This particular tunnel was opened in 1878 but
was abandoned in 1949 primarily due to its having been
lined with wood which required periodic replacement and
due to decreased traffic on the line. It was plugged in 1953. The new tunnel, used primarily for westbounds, was lined with rock and concrete.
It was opened in 1908 and remains today used only by
two Amtrak trains daily.
