Remarks & Notes
Ed Renfro was the swing dispatcher for the Interstate Railroad at Andover during the '60s. On a September afternoon in 1968, Ed's working the second trick. Before him are the tools of the trade of that era: two desk model Motorola radios, the long yellow train sheet, reports of cars placed, cars loaded and cars pulled, a manual Royal typewriter, a telephone with a cradle to allow him to prop the receiver against his ear and write or type at the same time, and a hot plate to keep his coffee warm. The Interstate dispatched its railroad by radio, issuing Form 19 train orders to conductors. It worked like a charm, too, and the eight or nine crews working each day managed to get to the mines and get back home to Andover with a minimum of problems. Oh...the latest issue of "Ties" magazine, Southern's house organ, is on top of the radio. It's doubtful Ed will have much time to read it this evening.
