Remarks & Notes

Easily the most unique on the Clinchfield roster and one of the rarest diesels in the US was the EMD NW3. This diesel was a standard switcher that was 1 of 7 built in 1942 for the Great Northern, it was sold to the Clinchfield in 1971. The NW3 features a 1000 hp, 12 cylinder engine, and featured a large cab and Blomberg B trucks. The 361 rarely left Erwin yard. Here, it is seen doing its main purpose, switching. 35mm slide from my collection, photographer unknown.
