Remarks & Notes |
Four F units are working hard as the westbound Super Chief moves past the Dick Wootton Ranch in Raton Pass.
The diesels will have contended with 6 miles of continuous 3.5% grade by the time they reach the summit of the pass. Their current speed is a far cry from the average of 77.3 miles per hour recorded daily
during the 202.4 mile journey from Dodge City, Kansas
to La Junta, Colorado when speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour occurred. In 1866 R. L. Wootton built a
home and established a toll road with a gate near here.
Only Native Americans were excluded from having to pay a toll. Mr. Wootton did not wish to argue with them
having fought them while acting as a scout for Kit Carson
and realizing how unlikely were they to understand the
the concept of a toll.
