The red and silver colors of the warbonnet scheme is perhaps the most famous and highly recognizable railroad paint scheme ever. Mike Haverty brought back this famous color scheme, adapted to modern freight locomotives, when he became president of the railroad in 1989. Mr. Haverty later went on to become president (and later executive chairman) of the Kansas City Southern. During his tenure, he also brought back the classic colors of KCS’s “Southern Belle” and began applying this famous paint scheme to the freight-hauling fleet too. Mr. Haverty, now non-excutive chairman as of October 1st, rode the business train operated for the Lexington Group on Saturday, October 26, 2013. If he looked over his shoulder as he walked along the glistening train at Union Station, he saw this westbound BNSF freight, led by a whipped (although, not as bad as some) former Super Fleet C44-9W No. 696. How the mighty have fallen! I wonder what he thought; but that aside and more importantly, I have to thank him greatly for bringing back two very classic and colorful paint schemes to modern railroading. Thanks, Mike!
