As crews lay temporary trackage across a large parking at the Los Angeles County Fairgounds ("Fairplex") to move Union Pacific "Big Boy" 4014 from display to the mainline, in order to haul it to Cheyenne, Wyoming, for rebuilding, holes needed to be "drilled" in the rail to accommodate the bolts and fishplates (which join the rails together end to end). These holes are cut into the rail with oxygen-acetylene torches, which leave some melted steel to be removed afterward.
