Remarks & Notes
Concealed by growing vegetation and rubble from the site of a former mining operation, the tail end of Norfolk Southern's Sand Lick branch slithers in a S curve formation at the site of abandoned XMV Mine No. 37 located near the McDowell County community of Filbert. Looking north towards Gary, remnants of the foundation of a coal load out still remain and several spur tracks are camouflaged in vegetation. Very few customers remain on the Sand Lick Branch that feeds into NS' Tug Fork Branch out of Wilcoe and eventually into the Pocahontas mainline in Welch. An active coal load out is located approximately one mile to the north, with the pictured section of right of way still technically classified as "in service".

Pictures of things often unseen in the world of railroading. Interesting equipment, operations, and people that help the railroad go around.
