Preheating the Rail - BNSF MOW (Maintenance of Way) workers use an Oxy-Acetylene torch to preheat the ends to two adjoining sections of 136lb. rail in preparation to welding them together using Thermite to form molten iron. The casting mold is attached to the rails and the crucible holding the powdered Thermite will be placed on top of the mold once the torch is removed. After the Thermite is ignited, molten iron will flow out of the ceramic crucible and into the mold forming the weld.
