The head brakeman is making the joint after a quick set-off of a few interchange cars to the Southern at Appalachia. As soon as the train brakes are pumped off, train 865 will continued the last ten upgrade miles to Norton, VA, where through cars will be handed off to the N&W. Two miles short of Norton, however, 865 will give up some of its train to the Interstate, which will then take it to Miller Yard, VA for interchange to the Clinchfield--a line in which the L&N has a 50 percent ownership (with Seaboard Coast Line).
