Remarks & Notes
Nearly 50 years ago, L&N train 32--the Martin's Fork Mine Run on the Cumberland Valley Division--arrives at the south end of Loyall Yard with the day's "catch" of loaded coal hoppers. The head brakeman is getting a track assignment from the yard master, but within a minute, RS3 141 will throttle up to drag 32's train over the crest of the hill and downgrade into the yard. The loads will be weighed (on the track scales to the right) later that evening and classified by block and direction on the rider hump yard. This was the old "loose car" way of handling coal traffic--a few years before solid unit trains from a single mine to a single consignee became common.
