Viewed from the famed Royal Gorge suspension bridge, a westbound Rio Grande local has just cleared the hanging bridge, and is continuing toward Salida and Tennessee Pass. These tracks are still active today, but only for the Royal Gorge scenic train that brings tourists through the gorge created by the Arkansas River. The rest of the route is mothballed by current owner Union Pacific, and through trains last ran in 1997. This route was contested between the Rio Grande and the Santa Fe, but the former would win out. The passenger train which carried the name of this famous locale would stop briefly in both directions to allow patrons to take it all in.
