Remarks & Notes
A southbound CSXT coal train breezes out of the south portal of 6,244 foot Hagans Tunnel into the Virginia sunshine. Ahead is the lower junction point--"Smiley"--of the switchback that will turn the train 90 degrees to the left, and gain over 100 feet of elevation. The 60 denotes the car count between the junction switch and the portal--a hold over from the days before two-way radios, when hand signals and switch lanterns in the night were necessary for railroads to function.
