One of three. Found in the Santa Fe yard in San Bernardino, California, was an unusual visitor – Waycar 999639. In 1969, Santa Fe rebuilt just three cabooses (what the Santa Fe called Waycars) without cupolas in order to fit through the rotary dumper at the smelter in Hurley, New Mexico. These cars, classed Ce-4, were in captive service on the unit trains that were operated between open pit copper mines and the smelter at Hurley. When the mines closed in 1982, these three cupola-less cars wandered the system, with 999639 (the former ATSF 2271) showing up in "San Berdoo" on December 30, 1982.
