Remarks & Notes |
Rush Hour at Jersey Avenue An NJ Transit local pauses between runs at Jersey Avenue while Amtrak 129 rushes past with "Cities Sprinter" 602 leading. An off-duty crew can be seen walking toward the COUNTY interlocking "tower", perhaps the least-attractive tower on the Northeast Corridor. This utilitarian structure was built in the late 1940s as a combination yard office and interlocking tower. It replaced an earlier tower in the same vicinity that was torn down when the adjacent yard was built (out of sight at left). COUNTY was closed around 1990, but the four track crossovers remain in place, now remotely controlled. The track that can be seen diverging off the NYP main is the Millstone Branch which serves both NJ Transit's Jersey Ave. station and a small number of Conrail freight customers. |
