The Alaska Railroad is served by two barges in Whittier, the CN Barge see photo #486721, and the ARMS Barge from Seattle. While the CN barge makes an appearance about every 10 days the ARMS Barge shows up weekly. As you can see in the two pictures the barges are quite different. The CN Barge is a typical rail car barge and only carries such. The ARMS barge on the other hand has a capacity of 51 rail cars but has been modified to carry containers in racks above the rail cars. Quite an operation in my opinion and entertaining to watch as they load and unload each barge. |
