Pipe loads for the gas fields. D&RGW K-36 #488 charges westbound out of Lava Loop, with loads of steel pipe that are destined for gas drilling operations in the Farmington, NM area, the better part of a day's journey away. Loads of this type were carried on board gondola cars with the ends removed. The outsized pipes were often longer than the cars that carried them, necessitating the use of idler flat cars between each load. The resulting train looked rather long for the amount of material being carried.
