Remarks & Notes

On the left, Class 6E1 units with E1598 in charge are just about ready to leave the large Bayhead Yard in Durban to return to their depot. On the right are Class 8E electric shunting units working some empty timber wagons. E1598 and E8051 are still in their beautiful original old South African Railway livery (even if a bit faded and tired here now), which is still a huge thrill to see for many of us railfans in South Africa - the only problem is that it's getting harder to find locomotives that remain in this livery these days. The Class 6E1 locomotives were totally withdrawn from service in KwaZulu Natal soon after this photo was taken and the Class 8E locomotives are very close to the end of their working days.
