Remarks & Notes
The poor old brakeman who drew the short straw to ride up front for five miles is showing the effects from a bitterly cold day. He looks miserable! This is the Corbin, KY wrecker and its outfit train, heading (or rather, backing) toward a derailment at Dryden. The crew had to run around the wrecker at Pennington, since the house track at Dryden was destroyed by the derailment. While derailments are always unfortunate, one of the more interesting aspects of American railroading many years ago was the deployment of the "big hook." This 250-ton Industrial Brownhoist wrecker (as L&N called 'em; other roads referred to them as derricks) is running with the boom trailing, which was SOP. And, in case you didn't remember, there's a message painted on the rear of the wrecker as a handy reminder. :)
