No, I wasn’t totally nuts when I snapped this frame of slide film. This is Natural Tunnel, VA, and the train is stopped to allow a contract photographer for Norfolk Southern to crank off several shots of a freshly-painted GP28-2 on the point of an eastbound coal train. The Appalachia Division superintendent was nice enough to alert me and invite me to join them. While the new paint looked good in some respects, it was a visible reminder that I should take every opportunity to photograph the old image of the Southern paint scheme while I still could. After all, not everyone was as excited about Norfolk Southern’s new “look” as they were. I preferred that Southern Railway would just hang on, if it were all the same to me.
