Remarks & Notes
The EMD FT #103

Built in 1939, this FT was not only the first of the original 555 "FTA" units but also the first in a series of thousands of newer generation "F" units built up until 1960. Developed by the Electro-Motive Corporation while under the control of General Motors, the FT's success spelled the end of steam power in the United States, though other internal combustion engines preceded the F unit such as EMC's own "E" unit and both gas and diesel engines from Winton which provided power to even earlier trains such as Union Pacific's M-10000 and CB&Q's Pioneer Zephyr. The "F" designates "freight" unlike the "E" units that preceded them where the "E" was for Eighteen Hundred HP. The F was rated at 1,350 HP and that's where the "T" came from, marketed as paired sets, the HP would be Twenty seven hundred HP. Both the A and B (Booster) unit were on display at the Spencer for the Streamliners event.
