To see a major Class One railroad use a caboose in modern day railroading is truly a sight to see, but you can observe exactly that in Chillicothe, Ohio almost daily. CSX's very own CH&D local or Chillicothe local uses ex-Baltimore and Ohio and later Chessie System caboose #904054 for its operations in and around the Chillicothe area. The crew traverses ex-B&O, C&O, and CH&D trackage which includes a set of Diamonds over the ex-Norfolk and Western Columbus Line, now Norfolk Southern at the Glatfelter Paper Mill. Many of the crew's operations utilize shoving, or reverse moves which provides for a unique situation in which the caboose is helpful. A piece of railroad history worth its weight in gold, historically and operationally. Taken 1/9/2015.
An ongoing/growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome, but seldom seen beauty of railroads at sundown or in the light of sunrise. From dusk to dawn, lights are on! (And I continue to find new "Lights In The Night"!)
