Remarks & Notes
The Clinchfield passenger station at Kingsport was too much for the modest local service the railroad offered until the mid'50s. On President's Day 2004, a southbound unit coal train eases through en route to Erwin, as seen from the Cherokee Street crossing. Kingsport is very much an industrial city, as evidenced by the huge paper mill in the background. It was once operated by Meade Corporation, but after a few ownership changes, today it's owned by Domtar. Fifty years ago and longer, Kingsport was ground zero for some of the foulest smelling air imaginable. Emissions from plants like this one, and particular the Tennessee Eastman plant (chemicals and other products) would chase visitors into the closest building to avoid the smells. Residents of Kingsport, however, were quick to defend their economic bread and butter by noting the atmosphere "smelled like money." :)
