Remarks & Notes
The Chambers Street Station of the J & M lines is an unusual example of the type. It was built in 1911 to handle a great deal of traffic. The reason for the great height of the ceiling was to allow one of the lines to start a steep grade to get on the nearby Brooklyn Bridge. However that plan was nixed. Then a rerouting of lines north of here cut traffic to a quarter of the planned use. So in 1931, the underused exit platforms were closed but left in place. Now only two out of three platforms are in service. And lightly at that.
