May 16, 1965 was the day the Black River and Western Railroad began running their excursions between Flemington and Ringoes, NJ, using former Great Western 2-8-0 #60 for power. Fifty years later, the railroad is still going strong and #60 is still cared for by many dedicated volunteers. In celebration of their Golden Anniversary, the Black River and Western offered excursions between Flemington and Ringoes for the same fare from 1965 - $2 a ticket. Power of course was #60 herself, which had it's numberplate painted gold for the occasion. All trips were sold out and a fun time was had by all. Here's to fifty more years of steam!
