On July 21, 1989, I was at Bulls Gap, TN to photograph an unlikely visitor---Nickel Plate 587---as the trainmaster and conductor slowly walked her around that same wye. This was an Asheville-Bulls Gap round trip that was part of the NRHS convention. I remember the 587 was fitted with the "nonesuch" chime whistle off N&W Class M 382, the regular Abingdon Branch mixed engine for years. To hear it ring off the hills was haunting. The engine is framed by the old hotel, which still stands at trackside.
