Work extra to Spruce. The 70-ton Lima Shay #4 heads north on the main line with a short work train destined for Spruce. This location is known as "Old Spruce" and is the junction between the main line from Cass to Spruce and the logging spur that heads up the hill to Bald Knob. Of course today, in the era of the Cass Scenic Railroad, that little spur is now generally thought of as the "Main Line", because Bald Knob is now the destination for most tourist trains. Back in the logging era however, Spruce was the center of activity, and the line up the hill was just a line for bringing down freshly cut timber.
For aficianados of geared steam engines, it's "almost heaven." Here are some scenes from the park's annual Railfan Weekends, as well as some private charters.
