Remarks & Notes |
Southbound Powhatan Arrow. Reaching the south end of the yard, the Conductor calls the "highball" and the nearly 400-ton J-Class begins to accelerate her "Powhatan Arrow" consist up to track speed. What we saw in the 40 mph performance of the 611 on the 2015 NS Steam Excursions was just a fraction of what this engine was capable of when opened up on straight track. During testing under controlled conditions on the Pennsylvania Railroad back in the day, the J-Class proved it was capable of at least 110 mph with a 15-car consist. I suspect that the practical limit was probably based more on the testicular fortitude of the engineer than on the theoretical limits of the machine. |
