Ever since Pan Am repainted ST GP-9 #77 into B&M maroon and gold, I had been been trying to catch it leading a train. On two different occasions, I photographed it on the point of parked trains. In September 2014, I felt like I was the only photographer who missed it leading the business train in perfect afternoon sunlight between White River Junction, VT and East Deerfield, MA.
On Friday, May 1, 2015, I received an early heads-up from a friend that Pan Am's heritage units were heading west from East Deerfield to bring in an MOED from North Adams. It just so happened that my wife and I were heading to Maine for a quick weekend away, and fortunately North Adams was on the way.
In the end, it was worth the long wait for my first photo of the 77 leading a moving train to be at the Hoosac Tunnel!
