Remarks & Notes
Burlington’s CD, the Chicago-Denver fast freight, makes the swing at the west end of Denver’s 38th Street Yard, and soon will cross the South Platte River and head up the long grade to Rio Grande’s North Yard. There it will be shuffled, reassembled and sent on to Salt Lake City and points west. On this March afternoon in 1966, an almost-new GP40 is in charge, followed by a GE U28B and an EMD GP30. The 175 represents the high point of four-axle motive power. Though highly successful, with over 2,500 sold, EMD’s GP40 and GP40-2 line will eventually give way to six-axle power just as EMD itself will be eclipsed by General Electric as the railroads’ favorite locomotive manufacturer.
